Barnaby and Cornelius are going to New York for a night on the town
Ermengarde and Ambrose are going to New York to win the polka contest prize and elope
Horace Vandergelder is going to New York to march in the 14th St. parade and propose to Irene Molloy
And Dolly Gallagher-Levi is going to New York simply because she is Dolly Gallagher-Levi !
Whaddya wanna bet everybody is gonna run into everybody else while they're all in New York?
These 4 scenes start in the feed store, moves to the Yonkers train station and ends up outside and inside the millinery shop in New York and they blend seamlessly from one to the next. This is accomplished by a ramp (or runway) which connects the downstage right and downstage left corners of the stage and encircles the orchestra. It was an ingenious "device" for this show to keep it moving. The characters walk out of the feed store and head for the ramp while the stage curtain closes behind them... they are joined by the townspeople and they all sing take a stroll around the ramp. By the time they've strolled around the ramp, the stage curtain has reopened and they all dance in to the Yonkers train station for the end of the song (and the Gower Champion "pretty picture end"). During the "Encore", the train pulls out of the station, the station itself moves off in the opposite direction and the exterior of the hat shop moves downstage. You can almost feel the audience heave a sigh as they settle in for the rest of the first act after the upbeat production number they've just witnessed. "Incidental" is drippy underscoring for Minnie babbling a mile-a-minute outside of the hat shop and the shop door (supposedly) sticks. Mrs. Molly comes in and tells Minnie to push on the stuck door and the entire exterior of the shop revolves as the side walls move in as they walk into the hat shop, the scene continues and the music ends.
