Ok, this is the best sounding way of playing this song. The tuning is strange, but the open strings ring just perfectly. Tune the low E down to A. the next string should be a whole octave above. The two middle strings should be the same note, and the top A and D should be an octave higher again. Here are the verse chords, with the last being played before the 1st verse and subsequent choruses.
D --0----x----0------------0--
A --0----x----0------------0--
D --0----x----0------------0--
D --0----x----0------------0--
A --5----2----9------------10-
A --5----2----9------------10-
The heavier chorus:
D ----------------------------
A ----------------------------
D ----------------------------
D ----------------------------
A --2-0-2--2-0-0-2-0-2--2-0-2-
A --2-0-2--2-0-0-2-0-2--2-0-2-
The actual order is hard to transcribe, but listen to the record and you'll get it right.
